Czech Beads

A bead is any small, decorative object that is pierced for threading or stringing and beads have been used around the world for almost as long a people have been able to bore holes and string materials together. Originally beads were made from pieces of animal bone or horn, from shells or from seeds, but later wood, pottery, then metals and glass were used.

Modern Beads

Beads range in size from under a millimeter to a couple of centimeters in diameter. Glass, plastic, and stone are probably the most common materials, but beads are also made from the seeds of the Bead tree, and also from bone, metal, resin, wood, clay, felt, paper, and other materials.
Beads can be obtained from many countries around the world. Most glass beads come from either the Czech Republic, Japan, China or India.

Beadwork is the craft of making things using beads. Most beadwork is used for jewellery such as necklaces, bracelets or earrings or decoration on clothing, but beads are also used in wall hangings and sculpture.
Beads can be threaded on wire or thread, woven together with thread, embroidered to cloth using a needle and thread or stuck to a surface (e.g. fabric, clay).
Beadwork techniques are broadly divided into loom and off-loom weaving, stringing, bead embroidery, bead crochet, and bead knitting.
